Cotton vs Polyester: Which T-Shirt Fabric Should You Choose?

The Basic Difference

Cotton is a natural fibre, breathable and soft against the skin, but it absorbs moisture rather than moving it away from the body. Polyester is a synthetic fibre — more durable and quick-drying, but it doesn't breathe the same way and can feel warmer or clingier against skin, especially in humid weather.

Comfort & Breathability

For everyday, all-day wear, cotton generally wins — it feels softer, breathes better, and doesn't trap heat against the skin the way polyester can. This is a big part of why cotton (and cotton-heavy blends) dominates casual and streetwear t-shirts specifically.

Durability & Shape Retention

Polyester technically resists wrinkling and holds its shape slightly better over time, and it's more resistant to shrinking. But good-quality, heavier-GSM cotton (240 GSM and up) with proper care closes most of that gap while staying far more comfortable to wear.

Printing & Graphics

Cotton takes screen prints and graphic designs more cleanly and holds colour better over repeated washes when cared for properly, which is a big reason graphic tees are almost always cotton or cotton-heavy blends rather than pure polyester.

What About Blends?

Cotton-polyester blends try to take the best of both — some of cotton's softness with some of polyester's durability — but usually end up as a compromise on both fronts rather than excelling at either. For genuine everyday comfort with a print-ready finish, 100% cotton at a solid GSM is still the more reliable choice for casual t-shirts.

Our Take

For streetwear and everyday wear specifically, cotton is the better call almost every time — it's more comfortable, breathes better, and holds prints better. Polyester makes more sense in activewear, where moisture-wicking and quick-drying matter more than everyday softness.
